NATIONAL STUDY RELEASED:

MADERA COMMUNITY HOSPITAL IS A HEALTHGRADES FIVE-STAR RECIPIENT FOR:

ORTHOPEDICS: TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT, HIP FRACTURE CARE,

SURGERY: APPENDECTOMY CARE

AND GYNECOLOGY AND MATERNITY CARE EXELLENCE AWARDS

Madera, California (November 4, 2014) – Madera Community Hospital today announced that it has received 5 stars for the quality of its orthopedics: total knee replacement, hip fracture care ,surgical appendectomy care and gynecology and maternity care from Healthgrades. Healthgrades is the leading online resource helping consumers make informed decisions in order to find the right doctor, the right hospital and the right care. This achievement is part of new findings and data released today on Healthgrades.com and in the Healthgrades 2015 Report to the Nation. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at over 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 33 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals and the impact that this variation may have on health outcomes and organizational costs. For example, from 2011-2013, if all hospitals as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5-stars as a group, on average 228,426 lives could potentially have been saved and 169,298 complications could potentially have been avoided.*

For Orthopedics, where Madera Community is a national leader, the differences between 5-star and 1-star facilities are clear and the impact on and outcomes for patients are significant. Patients having Knee Replacement Surgery in hospitals with 5-star ratings have, on average, a 63.8% lower risk of experiencing a complication than if they were treated by hospitals with a 1-star ratings. Additionally, those patients undergoing Knee Replacement Surgery in hospitals receiving a 1-star rating are 2.8 times more likely to experience a complication than those patients treated at 5-star rated facilities. A 5-star rating indicates that Madera Community Hospital's clinical outcomes are better than expected and patients can take comfort in knowing they are significantly more likely to have a complication free procedure. Less than 200 (191) hospitals nationally are 5-star rated for both Knee Replacement and Hip Fracture for 2015. In California, there are just 41 hospitals 5-star rated in both areas.

"The Healthgrades awards are a fantastic accomplishment and is exemplary of Cyril Rebel, M.D., Orthopedist, and Madera Community Hospital's culture of service and centers of excellence. It is a compliment to the organization, medical staff and employees to receive and be in the top 15% in the nation in orthopedic surgery and appendectomy surgery and the top 10% for Obstetrics and Gynecologic Surgery service excellence", said Evan J. Rayner, Chief Executive Officer, Madera Community Hospital.

"These accomplishments are part of Madera Community Hospital's overall mission to innovate and excel in healthcare services to the community as evident in its new programs such as treating strokes and becoming primary stroke certified; state-of- the-art telemedicine services; new physicians and other programs to be announced later in the year."

Kanwal Singh, M.D., Chief of Medical Staff at Madera Community Hospital, says,"These awards are not a surprise and are indicative of the superior outcomes and patient focused care that is relentlessly pursued as a team effort with the medical staff ,clinicians and employees at this organization."

"The Healthgrades analysis shows that not all hospitals perform equally in all procedures, so it is important that consumers do their homework when selecting a hospital," said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades. "Those hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades distinction have demonstrated a commitment to exceptional clinical quality care."

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare-patient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to each of 33 common conditions and procedures. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital's quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically better than expected), 3-star (statistically as expected) and 1-star (statistically worse than expected) categories. Detailed performance information, such as cohort-specific outcomes data and quality achievements, as well as more information on the Healthgrades 2015 Report to the Nation, including the complete methodology, can be found at www.healthgrades.com/quality.
